Wis. pilot, 19, safely crash-lands small plane

2013 coverage of Remington’s emergency landing in Beaver Dam, WI received regional media coverage. Here is one article from the Twin Cities Pioneer Press.

BEAVER DAM, Wis.—Dodge County deputies say the pilot who safely crash-landed a small plane with four people aboard was just 19 years old.

Remington Viney of Madison earned her pilot’s license last fall. She and three family members were flying from Madison to eastern Wisconsin on Sunday.

They were flying in a Piper Archer fixed-wing aircraft. Viney told deputies she tried to flip a switch that changes from one fuel tank to the other but the switch malfunctioned. She says the aircraft began to lose power.

She managed to land the plane in a newly planted cornfield near Beaver Dam. Deputies say everyone on board was safe and the aircraft was undamaged.

Dodge County sheriff’s Lt. Brian Loos said Monday that Viney did a “commendable job” landing the plane safely.
